Now a days sleep is hard to come by. I can't remember the last time I got a full nights rest...almost 3 years ago before Evie was born?! I don't know which part is keeping me up at night.....the acid reflux? Owen's snoring? Evie waking up? Racing thoughts of everything I need to get done? *Sigh* I miss those good old days of sleep.
So, because of my lack of sleep I'm going to share some random thoughts...read on if you care to.
I find it interesting that I get asked the question "Is this pregnancy different from your first one?" quite a bit - which is probably why I have been thinking about it so much. I spare them the long drawn out details.....but in answer to their questions, in case you are wondering.....yes, it's very different. I was relating this to my mom just the other day. When I was pregnant with Evie it was like this exciting, new world. Everything about pregnancy, I loved. I read every possible thing I could about the developing baby inside of me and what my body was doing. I loved my little baby bump and how cute it looked. I loved feeling her move around. I loved the "pregnancy glow" I had (or at least I thought I had!). I was so excited to pick out her crib and decorate her nursery...buying cute baby things. You know, the normal stuff! All of a sudden reality kicks in. You have this brand new baby and nothing can prepare you for becoming a mommy. You could read all of the books in the world and talk to every single person you know, who has become a mommy for the first time, and you don't know how hard it is, until you experience it for yourself. Suddenly, all of that other stuff that you were obsessed with for so long...doesn't even really matter anymore.
I remember that first night home from the hospital with Evie. It was one of the hardest nights of my life. She didn't sleep all night long (obviously, most babies don't....but like I said before, you don't really get it until you experience it for yourself). I was in tears by 6 am. After that, I dreaded the night. To top it off, at that time Owen traveled for work and was gone most nights of the week. I was literally doing it all by myself. I would cry myself to sleep every night for the first few weeks and praying to be able to know what to do (I'm sure there were some postpartum hormones that played a role in that) it's a stressful thing to realize that this little human being depends entirely on you. As time passed, mommy, daddy, and baby adjusted to their new life together.......I'm not gonna lie, though, that first year was hard! Lucky for me, my two older sisters AND a sister in-law had babies around the same time I did. My oldest sister, Angie, was the best resource I had, having gone through this 2x by then. She was always checking in on me and Ev's and always answered my calls and questions. If it weren't for her, I don't know what I would have done! Thanks, Angie - you are the best :)
So, connecting these thoughts together.....this pregnancy is different - not only am I experiencing aches and pains earlier than I did with the first one, acid reflux has hit much sooner than last time, and I feel like I'm carrying differently (blame it on the stretched out uterus and stomach muscles?!). I'm not obsessed with this pregnancy like I was with the first one, maybe because I have a toddler who demands most of my time and attention?! I haven't really prepared anything for this one, maybe because I'm not 100% on the sex of the baby, so it's hard to be really excited? I don't know. All I know is it's definitely different this second time. With that being said - I'm hoping the second time around coming home from the hospital will be easier. I'm hoping breastfeeding will be easier this second time. I'm just hoping that I have had enough experience with the first one, that the second one won't be such a shock. I know adding another child won't be easy and will come with it's own adjustments, and I'm sure nothing can or will prepare me for that..............Anyone out there reading this - is this a normal thought process?! Am I crazy?! Break it to me gently - how hard is it, going from one kid to two kids?
